Nvidia wants you to know it cares about water. The company recently announced initiatives to reduce water consumption in data centers that house its GPUs—a timely move as AI infrastructure faces growing scrutiny for its environmental impact.
The announcement landed well. Sustainability-focused headlines followed. But for technology leaders evaluating vendors and building long-term infrastructure strategies, the real question isn’t whether Nvidia is doing something good. It’s whether that something is enough—and whether it’s measurable.
Why Water Became the Talking Point
Data centers are thirsty. Cooling servers—especially the high-performance GPUs that power AI workloads—requires enormous amounts of water. A single large data center can consume millions of liters daily, often in regions already facing water stress.
Nvidia’s focus on water makes sense from a PR standpoint. Water usage is tangible and easy to communicate. It also sidesteps the thornier conversation about energy consumption, where the numbers are far larger and the solutions more expensive.
Industry observers note this pattern across the tech sector: announce progress on one metric while staying quiet on others. It’s not dishonest, but it’s incomplete. And incomplete data makes procurement decisions harder.
The Missing Pieces in the Sustainability Story
Water is one slice of AI’s environmental footprint. Energy consumption is another—and it dwarfs water in terms of carbon impact. Training a single large language model can emit as much carbon as five cars over their entire lifetimes.
Then there’s embodied carbon: the emissions baked into manufacturing chips, servers, and networking equipment before they’re ever powered on. Nvidia’s GPUs are fabricated by TSMC in Taiwan using energy-intensive processes. That footprint doesn’t appear in data center water metrics.
E-waste is the third piece. AI hardware cycles are short. GPUs that were cutting-edge two years ago are now being replaced. Where do they go? Most vendors don’t say.
CIOs evaluating sustainability claims need to understand what’s being measured—and what isn’t. A vendor touting water savings while ignoring energy, manufacturing emissions, and end-of-life disposal isn’t giving you the full picture.
Sustainability Is Now a Procurement Criterion
This matters because sustainability metrics are moving from marketing material to contract language. The companies that get ahead of this will be those demanding standardized sustainability SLAs—service level agreements that include water, energy, carbon, and waste metrics with third-party verification. The laggards will be those who accept press releases as evidence.
What to Demand From Your Vendors
Nvidia’s water announcement is a starting point, not an endpoint. CIOs and CTOs should use it as an opening to have harder conversations with all their infrastructure vendors—cloud providers, hardware suppliers, and colocation partners.
Ask for Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) numbers—the ratio of total facility energy to IT equipment energy. Ask for Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE) too. Then ask how those numbers are calculated and whether they’re audited.
Push for lifecycle data. What’s the carbon footprint of manufacturing the equipment you’re buying? What happens to it when you’re done? Does the vendor have take-back or recycling programs?
Finally, ask whether sustainability commitments come with contractual teeth. A target in a press release is a hope. A target in an SLA is a commitment.
What This Means for You
Nvidia addressing water consumption is a positive step, but it’s a narrow one. The real opportunity for technology leaders is to use this moment to raise the bar across all environmental metrics—not just the ones vendors choose to highlight.
Build sustainability into your procurement process now. Require standardized reporting. Compare vendors on lifecycle impact, not just performance and price. The companies that treat environmental accountability as a core vendor criterion—rather than a nice-to-have—will be better positioned for regulatory changes, client expectations, and the genuine costs of running AI infrastructure responsibly.
The question isn’t whether Nvidia’s announcement matters. It’s whether you’ll settle for partial answers or demand the whole story.
